Genesis Chapter 1: Creation, Dominion and The Word

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

This is how the Bible begins. It lets us know that God created the planet we live on and the “space” surrounding it. I believe scientists refer to this creation as the Big Bang Theory. This first line is important because it explains how we got here. Many times we wonder if there is life or ever was life on other planets. The way the Earth is described in verse 2 seems to depict the description of other planets in our solar system. Until God said “Let there be light” and “downloaded” all living things onto the planet for our techies.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Now according to this verse we are made in God’s likeness. Many have pondered what does God look like. We may not know the features of his face but what we do know is that he has two eyes, ears, one nose and a mouth. We look like our creator/father/mother. In addition, you notice God says “our image”. This implies that God is having a conversation with someone as he is bringing our planet to life. Could this person be “The Word” as stated in John chapter 3:1? “In the beginning was the word and the word was with God”. So we are made in the image of God and his Word. The word is powerful. There is a phrase that when someone needs to trust you…you say all I have is my word. And your word holds more weight than money. The Word represents trust. Possibly hence the phrase “In God we Trust.” So The Word is important in our creation and we are a result of The Word which we will explore further on.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

In this verse God blesses us by giving us Dominion over the Earth and the power to subdue it. That is powerful. If you think about past creatures that have lived on this Earth and the creatures that are still in existence that are more ferocious than human beings how are we able to tame them? It’s because of God’s blessing that we are able to domesticate animals that seem like they shouldn’t be domesticated otherwise. What a blessing. This definitely has to be in the top ten of blessings!!

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

In the last two verses of Genesis chapter 1 God says that he has given all living creatures the green herb for meat and for humans the fruit of all trees. Does this suggests that we should be vegetarians? It may explain why meat takes so long to digest because God never intended for us to consume this originally. It also may explain why we get colon cancer. As some studies suggest those whose diets are high in red meats tend to get this type of cancer. Food for thought…no pun intended.
